Printed Circuit Boards From Prototyping to Manufacturing

Pcb manufacturing

Printed circuit boards (PCB) are used in a variety of industries. From traffic lights to home computers and beyond, PCB assemblies enable much-needed and utilized technologies to function. New PCB designs are constantly under research and development.

Industry Growth

Given all the purposes for PCBs, it’s not surprising that the industry is experiencing growth. According to market research by Technavio’s analyst, the global market is expected to increase 3% by 2020. Furthermore, by 2022, this global market is projected to be valued at approximately $72.6 billion.

Rigid PCBs

In order to produce a rigid PCB,it requires an insulating substrate. The primary insulating substrate that is used with most rigid PCBs is FR-4 glass epoxy. To complete this process, a thin layer of copper foil is laminated to the FR-4 panel. This will be laminated to either 1 or the both sides of this panel. Then, the circuitry interconnections will be etched into these copper layers. The end results is a printed circuit board.

Different Types of Circuit Assemblies

There are different types of circuit assemblies, from the simple to the more complex. Integrated circuits, which may be referred to as ICs or microchips, are common. So, too, are hybrid circuits.

Temperature Markers

At first, the material for a temperature marker is opaque. Once it attains 413 degrees Fahrenheit, however, it actually liquifies before becoming shiny. This process is non-reversible, however.

Laminates

Laminates are also processed and manufactured under pressure and at specific temperatures. This process requires creating layers of cloth or paper with thermostat resin in order to form a final piece that holds together and possesses a uniform thickness. While laminates will vary in size, they can be up to 4 by 8 feet in length and width.

What Causes PCBs to Fail

While there may be other reasons why PCB failures to occur, they are usually linked to the following factors:

  • Performance issues related to environmental stresses
  • Manufacturer-related problems that may occur during production

Circuit Board Prototyping and Testing

Circuit board prototyping is often used for testing purposes as well as for specific applications .Due to this, quick turn PCB prototypes are needed in order to expedite the process. When PCB design and layout services are needed, it makes sense to have these and manufacturing taken care of by the same shop. This can also make a significant different in quality control.
