There are many types of plastic and all are used for a plethora of reasons. Whether they be used to protect food, keep product safe, hold things inside or used for storage.

Many types of plastics are used on retail products. There are rigid plastics, such as the type used for tubs, pots and jars. Rigid plastics have a 27% share, making it the second largest packing category. Companies are even trying to reduce the amount of plastic used in products. Around 20 years ago one gallon plastic milk jugs used a lot more plastic than they do now. Today, they use 30% less of the weight in plastic than before.

The plastic industry is growing yearly. At the current moment, there are approximately one million workers employed by the U.S. plastics industry. The industry contributes $375 billion to the economy. During the period between 2010 and 2015, the global market for flexible packaging grew at an annual average rate of 3.4%, reaching $248 billion. It is estimated that between 2012 and 2018 the market will grow from $74 million to nearly $100 million.

Use for Flexible Plastics

While we often do no think about all the ways plastic is used, it is actually often used in things we use daily. Food, magazines, movies, toys, pet items and so much more all use plastic to contain the product.

The heat sealed plastic pouches and wraps keep the food packaged inside of it fresher as well as protects it from contamination. Experts who have researched the packaging process claim that every pound of plastic packaging reduces food waste by up to 1.7 pounds. While shipping items, or selling them in stores, flexible plastic can be used to envelope the product, keeping them safe from damage, dirt, and looking good as new. It doesn’t even take much plastic to create the items we use so frequently. With only two pounds of plastic, 1,300 ounces, which is equal to about 10 gallons, can be made to contain any sort of plastic stored beverage. If aluminum were used instead, it would take three pounds.
