Proper Surface Preparation
Just as a painter and their canvas, an industrial coating service must have properly prepared surfaces for their coatings to adhere properly. This includes both cleaning and roughening the substrate surface to be coated. First, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned, and then roughened by chemical etching, which allows the coating to “bite” into the surface and stick to it indefinitely. This process results in a strengthened bond between the coating and its surface, and should be performed with applied medical coatings and other coatings as well.
Dry Film Thickness
Dry film thickness (DFT) provides vital information pertaining to the expected life of the substance, the product’s fitness for purpose, its appearance, and ensures compliance with a long list of International Standards. This is perhaps one of the most important steps in the process and should be done without error. If a coating is applied too thickly, problems such as mud-cracking, sagging or blisters can occur. If too thinly, hazing or low gloss will be apparent.
Proper Cure
The last part of the coating process is providing a proper cure for the coating. Curing the bonds between coating and surface is done by heating to 425 degrees Celcius for about 10 minutes for PTFE coatings.
